2026 Summer College Internship Program for Safe Quality Foods Implementation in Operations - Harbor Wholesale

 

**Harbor Internships are onsite in Modesto, CA for students with existing residence in the Greater Modesto/Mid-Valley area.

 

Hourly Pay: $20.00

 

Education

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in:
  • Food Science
  • Food Safety
  • Supply Chain / Logistics
  • Environmental Health & Safety
  • Biology or related field

 

General Internship

  • Participate in informational interviews with department heads and executives. 
  • Develop a group project for presentation to executive team.
  • Experience hands on day in the life with departments outside the office (Sales, Transportation, Operations).
  • Receive mentorship with Internship Leaders to cover various business topics related to career development, networking, interview best practices, AI, and more. 

 

The SQF Program Implementation Intern will assist the Food Safety and Quality team with the implementation, organization, and ongoing improvement of the Safe Quality Food (SQF) program within a warehouse distribution environment. This internship provides hands-on experience with food safety systems, regulatory compliance, documentation management, and internal auditing processes.

 

The intern will support initiatives that ensure compliance with **Safe Quality Food Institute standards and contribute to maintaining a strong food safety culture within warehouse operations.

 

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

SQF Program Support

  • Assist with the implementation and maintenance of the warehouse SQF program.
  • Help review and organize SQF documentation including policies, procedures, and records.
  • Support updates to the SQF manual and related food safety documentation.
  • Assist in verifying compliance with SQF code requirements.

Documentation & Record Management

  • Organize food safety records including inspections, monitoring logs, and corrective actions.
  • Assist with document control and ensuring current procedures are accessible to employees.
  • Help maintain training records related to food safety and SQF requirements.

Internal Auditing Support

  • Assist with conducting internal SQF audits of warehouse operations.
  • Participate in inspections of sanitation, storage practices, pest control, and facility conditions.
  • Document findings and assist with corrective action tracking.

Operational Food Safety Monitoring

  • Observe warehouse practices to ensure compliance with food safety procedures.
  • Assist with monitoring programs such as:
    • Product traceability
    • Recall readiness
    • Allergen control (if applicable)
    • Storage and handling requirements

Training & Food Safety Culture

  • Assist with preparing food safety training materials.
  • Support toolbox talks or brief training sessions related to food safety and quality.
  • Help promote food safety awareness across warehouse teams.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve food safety processes and documentation.
  • Assist with preparing for SQF certification or surveillance audits.
  • Support special food safety or quality improvement projects.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Interest in food safety systems and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to review procedures and documentation for accuracy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.

Preferred Experience

  • Basic understanding of food safety principles (HACCP, GMPs, sanitation).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office or documentation systems.
  • Interest in warehouse or distribution center operations.
